Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to remove an underground plume of creosote at its contaminated rail yard. Now, the most recent tests show that the contamination could continue to affect people who live near.

Researchers believe it's due to the high incidence of cancers in the region. Two years after launching an all-state health investigation and a study by researchers, they found that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic cancer in children and adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the region around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote, a common chemical, is employed in the treatment of wood. It can cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance that ranges from amber to black in color. It has a smoky smell and a bitter taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.

It is utilized in the United States to treat railroad ties, Union Pacific Houston Cancer as well as other types of woods, including fence posts and utility poles, as well as pilings from marine construction. It is also used to guard log structures and homes from rot and insect infestation.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) creosote can be a chemical that could be dangerous. In short-term exposure, it can cause eye and skin irritation as well as chemical burns stomach pain, burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney issues.

Exposure for long periods can lead to skin and scrotum cancer. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.

It is regarded as a possible human carcinogen according to the EPA. It has been linked with many types of cancer that include esophageal aswell as lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for a long time to creosote due to a former railroad yard right next to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their soil, homes and continues to spread underground.

Harris County and Houston have joined the effort against Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and adopt preventative measures to stop it from spreading.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific Houston Cancer Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil and caused serious health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation from the railroad to help cover the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They also claim to be suffering from environmental racism and discrimination, in addition to other forms of pollution that has adversely affected their families and friends.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemical compounds that do not degrade quickly in the environment, and they can stay in the air, water, soil or in sediment for a long duration. They can be found in a variety places, including natural disasters and industrial accidents, cigarette smoke and incineration, as well as hazardous waste.

The health effects of dioxin are not known at low levels, but there is evidence that dioxin can cause cancer and other serious illnesses. People who are exposed to higher levels are believed to be at a higher risk of heart disease, organ cancers, immune system problems and endocrine changes, such as hormonal imbalances. They can also cause reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, menstrual and diabetes issues hair loss, weight loss and facial cysts, known as chloracne.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most common method that people are exposed dioxin is through drinking water or food. They are not volatile or water-soluble, so they are more likely to be absorbed into the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products or fish and other seafood.

It is nevertheless important to be aware that the amount of exposure that has adverse effects on your health is contingent upon various factors, including the amount you eat or drink, the frequency you drink or eat and the amount of air you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender and age, nutritional status, and family traits to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.

The kind of contaminant is also important. The EPA states that certain toxins are more likely to cause harm effect on the human body than others. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative impact on your health than creosote.

For instance, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys, and liver. They can also harm the immune system and cause issues in the development of healthy bones, teeth and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for a long time about cluster cancer deaths connected to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located close to their homes. The city's health department announced on Friday that it has found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The release stated that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's planning to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and said that a proposal submitted to Texas environmental regulators will not be adequate in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenylsare harmful chemicals that have been used for more than 60 years in consumer and industrial products. These chemicals were banned in 1979 after being proven to cause cancer, suppress the immune system, and hinder learning.

PCBs can infect soil and water as well as air in many areas of the world after they are released into the environment. They bind strongly to organic matter and are often persistent and therefore, are easy to transport and build up in the environment.

In the end, PCBs are a major issue for the protection of public health and the environment. The EPA considers them a potential carcinogen for humans and has proven that they can cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Some studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially relevant for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while in the womb.

PCBs are mainly consumed through food items. Fish are the primary source of exposure because they are the largest source of PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products, and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking water is another method of exposure. This can be caused by leaks or spills which could occur in electrical and other equipment.

Similarly, people can also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or through the skin. These chemicals can cause a condition called Chloracne. This is a tiny, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that can last for months or even years.

The effects of PCBs on the human body are not fully known. Some researchers have suggested that they may cause liver and biliary tract cancers in humans, but more research is needed to find out what this means for us.

The EPA is also examining whether these chemicals could cause birth defects in newborn babies. A low birth weight is associated with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. Two studies showed that children born with higher levels PCBs in their cord blood were born with lower birth weights and/or older.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and is found in a variety of products, including pipes, paints, and food cans. It is absorbed by the body through two major pathways: oral and respiratory.

It is a strong chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other chemicals in your environment. This can cause it to accumulate within the body. This can lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other ailments.

Houston residents who reside near the Union Pac Railroad's creosote facility have a high rate of cancer. The city has asked the federal government to instruct the railroad to clean up its contaminated site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a history in which it has been a source of contamination for its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that could cause cancer. The Railroad Cancer has been trying to clean up the contamination, but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents say.

One of the most significant problems that arose from the contamination was the groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the area. A recent study by health officials has found that soil samples taken from the rail yard have higher levels of creosote than the recommended amount for drinking water.

Another reason to be concerned is that creosote is slowly disappearing into the air. As it does, it causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors, which are harmful for children as well as adults.

It is also possible that particles are causing cancers among the residents who breathe the vapors in. To learn more about the effect of the vapors' effects on the lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being conducted in the neighborhood.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. It is a sad situation and needs to be addressed immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that the rate of leukemia was five times higher for children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was expected. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in the neighborhood than they were elsewhere in Texas.
