Soak the rabbet - the groove in the wood that holds the glass -with linseed oil to aid in securing the putty to stay in place. Take measurements of the width and height of the old pane, and order a piece of new glass that is at least 1/8 inch smaller in each direction. This allows for seasonal expansion and contraction.

Be sure to wear robust work gloves and eye protection when working with broken glass. Put newspaper in the sash in order to catch any glass replace window fragments. Get rid of them using your regular garbage. If the frame is made of wood, you'll need a heat gun to soften the old glazing putty before you are able to take it off.

It is helpful to roll the putty into a rope about 3/4 inch thick. Press the rope into rabbets and smooth the edges with a putty knife. You may want to apply a primer for the exterior as soon a possible, since it could take some time for the putty skin to fully cover.

Press the glazier's point at the center of the side and at the top of the bottom rail once the new pane has been installed. You want them to be about the length of the sash. Press them into the putty using your thumb.

After you have removed the old glazing using a utility knife, you can use it to scrape any remaining glaze compound out of the frame's sash. After you have removed the old glazier's and putty smooth any rough spots on the frame using sandpaper. Then apply a thin layer linseed oil to the area where the glass to be replaced will be placed (Fig. 4). Linseed oil makes the new putty more pliable, and it dries slower.
