| A simple black-and-white Australian numberplate is predicted to fetch up to seven figures at auction. The black-and-white heritage Victorian licence plate bearing the characters '52' (VIC52), will go to auction with Shannon's Action house between May 23 to May 30 carrying an expected price tag of between $1.3-$1.6million. Vintage Victorian and plates are a hot item for collectors, with the price growing exponentially for repeating or fewer numbers. A NSW heritage license plate in the same auction bearing the number '31' is estimated to cost about the same as the Victorian plates. However, a set of double-digit, heritage Queensland plates in the auction will set back a buyer back about $650,000 and $750,000. A set of simple yet rare Victorian heritage licence plates (pictured) are expected to fetch between $1.3-$1.6million when they go to auction later this month The licence plate - which dates back more than a century to the 1910s - was last auctioned at a Roads and Traffic Authority auction in 1984. 'The plate has been in the same ownership since 1984,' Christophe Boribon, Shannons Auctions' national auctions manager, told 3AW. 'So it's been tightly held in that ownership for nearly 40 years.' According to Mr Boribon, the largest licence plate sale he knows of was a set of VIC14 plates that were sold by the auction house last year. 'I think there are a lot of genuine collectors out there that have been in the numberplate game for a number of years,' Mr Boribon said, adding that each plate could mean something special to each bidder. 'There are number of combinations that sometimes mean something to people in certain cultures and others basically just want to get the lowest number possible.' Mr Boridon suggested the elusive 'VIC1' license plate, which was last valued at about $2million, could have ballooned to 'anywhere between $7m to $10m in today's market'. Licence plates have become a hot item for collectors who have caused the price to balloon, with the elusive 'VIC1' (pictured) licence plate potentially costing between $7-10million, last photographed on a $200,000 Mercedes AMG in Melbourne in 2021 The 'VIC1' plate is especially rare not only due to it having the lowest and fewest amount of numbers, but also because of its especially rich history. The plate was produced for the first time in 1932 and was reportedly the cause of a disagreement between the the Premier, the Police Commissioner and the Governor about who should get to keep it. To keep the peace, none of the authorities were allowed to keep the plate and it was instead locked in a vault at the Motor Registration Board. In 1984, the plates were auctioned off for $165,000 to Gary Price, a retired mechanic from Ballarat. The plates then changed hands a number of times before landing in the hands of the former Coles CEO, Peter Bartels, in 2014 for an undisclosed amount. It is unknown if Mr Bartels still owned the plates when they were last photographed on a $200,000 Mercedes AMG in Melbourne in 2021.
